What’s Happening with Solar Incentives and What It Means for Hawai’i

Update (July 15, 2025)

Since this post was first published, legislation to end the 30% federal solar tax credit early has passed through both the House and Senate. The credit is now scheduled to expire on December 31, 2025.

For homeowners considering solar, we recommend committing to installation by October 31 to allow enough time for planning, permitting, and design. If you’ve been exploring your options, now is a great time to get started. Our solar design team is here to answer questions, walk you through the process, and help you make the most of the incentives that are still available.

We’ll continue to update our blog as more details become available.

There’s been movement in Washington, D.C., that could impact how long the federal solar tax credit remains in place. In May, the U.S. House passed legislation that proposes ending the 30% federal tax credit for residential solar (also known as the ITC) earlier than expected.

While this proposal still has to go through the Senate and is not yet law, it’s a good time to understand what’s on the table and what that means for homeowners in Hawai’i.

We believe being informed helps us make better decisions for our homes and communities.

What’s Changing?

The federal solar tax credit allows homeowners to claim 30% of their solar installation cost as a credit on their federal taxes. It was initially set to remain in place through 2032.

The new legislation proposes ending this credit by the end of 2025. That would shorten the timeframe for homeowners using this resource to make solar more affordable.

For now, the 30% tax credit is still available.

Why It Matters in Hawai‘i

Here in Hawai‘i, solar plays a unique role. We have abundant sun and some of the country’s highest utility rates. Over 552,000 homes statewide are now powered by solar, thanks to a combination of local programs, community interest, and tools like the federal tax credit.

Some local programs may also be affected by broader policy shifts. For now, there are still opportunities to save. As we track these changes, we’re focused on helping homeowners take informed next steps based on current options.

If you’re considering adding solar and battery storage to your home, now is a good time to explore what’s available and plan ahead.

We’ll continue helping homeowners navigate these changes.

We’ll also update this post as more details become available.
